Our Culture

When you arrive in Lamu many aspects will make you feel like time stopped. You will be met by ancient and modern way of living where is advisable to apply some cultural relativism. Our villages are peaceful and the people of Lamu are friendly and always ready to help. We kindly ask that you understand that you are entering a culture that is probably different from yours.

Most of the population is Islamic and we kindly request that you adhere to their cultural way of living, therefore when you are walking through the villages, we advise our visitors to dress modestly in an effort to manage cultural shock and respect our unesco world heritage site.

Please bear in mind that being situated very close to the equator, Lamu can get very hot and humid so light clothing and shawls are ideal for comfort as well as staying respectful.
